CHAMPION— Edward Kokeok of Shishmaref won the boys 5-k race in a time of 21:18.

BSSD Conference XC champions headed to Anchorage

Six runners from the Bering Strait School District are headed to the Alaska cross country state championships in Anchorage on Saturday. The three boys and three girls ran to top three positions in the BSSD Conference XC Championships Saturday, Sept. 23 at Unalakleet.
Freshman Patricia Washington of St. Michael won the girls race with an impressive margin of 1:32 over second place Felicia Ione of White Mountain. Anjoli Agloinga, also a White Mountain runner, was another minute back.
In the boys race Edward Kokeok of Shishmaref bested Unalakleet’s Joey Kniseley by 11 seconds. Elim’s Jacob Brouillette was third. Twenty-seven boys and 11 girls ran their respective races. Runners also competed in an elementary school race and an open race for non-varsity runners and anybody else who wanted to test their lungs and legs.
While cross country for many of the athletes is conditioning for other sports the top runners said they like it for the sport itself.
“I like cross country,” said girls winner Patricia Washington, who also competes in basketball and NYO.
“I like it. I like to run,” said Edward Kokeok, the boys winner.
“I enjoy it for the sport and to get in shape for other sports,” said Elim’s Jacob Brouillette, who was third in the boys race.
The tough, flinty Unalakleet course contrasts with the state championship course at Bartlett High in Anchorage. While Bartlett has the up and down sections the course, thanks to much rain in Anchorage over the past few months, is muddy and sloppy.
Brevig Mission coach Cory Kralovetz likes the Unakaleet course.
“It’s a challenging course. Good variety,” he said. “The tundra is a nice feature. It’s got the road section.” Kralovetz finished in 7th position in the open race.
