Jonathan Kenneth Sarren

Jonathan Kenneth Sarren

March 28, 1950 - August 27, 2016

Johnny (“Ikayuaq”— Person Who Helps Others) Sarren passed away in his home on August 27, 2016 with family by his side. He was born in Nome to Flora Dalilak (Adams) and adopted by Eugene (Qanaiyak) and Elizabeth (Mahsengah) Sarren of Unalakleet, whom he lovingly referred to as Dad and Mom.

Johnny is survived by his sister Blanche Cragle; daughter Keimone Sarren and sons Eugene and Jeremy Sarren; his grandchildren Wiatt, Dominick and Timothy; nephew Jimmy Cragle and niece Marie Melin and their children. He is also survived by his longtime childhood friend William Christensen and many other relatives and friends.

He went to school in Unalakleet and Anchorage and graduated from East High School.  He attended college in California and studied auto mechanics.  He traveled many places around the world, including Hawaii, Fiji, Mexico and Australia.

Johnny worked as a chef during the pipeline days. He had held a commercial permit for herring and salmon, and subsistence fished every year. He spent 24 years dedicated to his work at West Coast Construction where he often was the first one in to brew a pot of coffee for any visitor who was up early enough to come visit. After his retirement in 2014, he still would visit the airport to have a cup of coffee and keep up with daily activities. The people of Unalakleet will remember passing his house and seeing him in the window. They will remember him and the abundance of food he offered to any who would visit.

He enjoyed the great outdoors and all that Alaska had to offer including hunting, trapping, and fishing. He loved to be at the cabin, living off the land, and spending quality time with his friends and family. He passed that passion onto his children.

Peace to your memory, dear father, brother, friend.  May you always rest in peace with love and our thoughts and prayers.
