Jo Putman

Jo Chambers Putman

July 9, 1945 - May 16, 2021

A wise and loving soul, Jo Chambers Putman left this world on Sunday, May 16, 2021 at the Anchorage Pioneers Home.

She was born on July 9, 1945 to Myrtle (Fagerstrom) Chambers and Fred Gutillius Chambers in Lewisburg, PA after the family relocated there from Nome, AK. Jo joined three siblings, Fred (known as Fritz), Lynn and Ann. She was a sweet, joyful presence from her earliest years and influenced countless people throughout her life’s journey.

A Nome High School Class of 1963 alumna, after graduating from the University of Alaska Fairbanks, she returned to Nome some years later and was instrumental in developing the Kawerak Headstart Program. As the eventual director, she built a region-wide network of schools to support Headstart families by mentoring local teachers and homeschoolers, preparing many students to become today’s community leaders.

While we mourn her passing deeply, we take great comfort knowing that she is free to embark on her next adventure without the pain her earthly vehicle had caused her in recent years.

A remembrance of Jo was held in Anchorage on Sunday, May 23. A Celebration of Life is planned for her Nome family and friends this summer. A full obituary and information about the Nome event will be published at a later date. If you were blessed to know this remarkable woman, please take a moment to smile and remember Jo with joy.
