Anita Marie Grant

Jan. 4, 1926 ~ Sept. 19, 2022

Anita Marie Grant Auwiktugaaq (Koutchak) was born on January 4, 1926 to Benjamin and Edna Koutchak in Unalakleet, Alaska.

Anita met and married John Gonongnan Grant on January 20, 1950.  She was an accomplished hunter, fisherwoman and subsistence gatherer which included berry picking with her family and friends. Other subsistence activities included spending time with John at their cabin upriver.  Other interests include ice fishing activities and watching the Iditarod mushers pass from the bank below her home. It was her desire to have her cabin open to be used as a shelter if needed after her husband John passed.

Anita is survived by her sister Teresa Hill, Benjamin (Leila) Eakon and grandson Eddie Katchatag (Della)  whom she helped raise along with his daughter Eunice.  She was extremely proud of her great-great grandchildren as well and often spoke of them fondly, Leanna, Benjamin, Qutuuqhuuq, Theodore, Elora and Leia.

She was preceded in death by her son Arnold (Qutuuqhuuq), Marion Eakon (whom she lovingly raised), her brother Richard (Lily) Koutchak, her sister Mary (Klemet) Klemetson, her brother Jack (Ruth) Koutchak, her sister Irene (Stanton) Katchatag, her sister Evelyn (Bud) Rynearson, her sister Marion (Misha) Dick, her brother Oscar (Mae) Koutchak.  Anita leaves many nieces and nephews throughout Alaska and in the Lower 48.

Special thanks go to her caretakers at the Quyana Care facility where she resided for four years until her death.  The family would like to express their gratitude to Louisa Paniptchuk and Ron Pitka for their carpentry skills with the box top and the cross.

Anita had a strong friendship with Teresa Nanouk, Helen Lockwood and Laura Paniptchuk

Anita was very fond of the following:  Herbie, Jerry, Dean and Ivanoff, Harry Johnson Jr., Eugene Asicksik, Clarence Paniptchuk, Stanton Paniptchuk, Fred Katchatag, Jr. Alvin Ivanoff and Jeremiah Sookiayak, Max Wilson.

Anita had many acquaintances and if we did not acknowledge anyone it was unintentional but we appreciate your thoughts and condolences.
